The Power of Showing Up

By Robert Schwander, Owner, Fitness Counseling, Inc.

This month’s article is written about a very special client of mine, Lindsay Grimmer. Lindsay and I have been training together for the past 23 years. Lindsay was born in Indiana, and at the age of four, her family moved to Rockford, Illinois. Lindsay attended Guilford High School and upon graduating, went to college at Northwestern and studied and graduated with a degree in education. Lindsay worked in education in Rockford for 2-1/2 years until she and her husband, Gary, moved to Peoria, Illinois. Lindsay raised her children until 1986, and she decided to return to teaching and continued teaching first and second grade within the Dunlap school district until 2010, when she retired.

I still remember the first time I met Lindsay. I was at my other fitness center on Candletree Drive. At the time, I was already training her husband, Gary, and he brought her in to see the facility and engage in a consultation to see if I could help her with her fitness needs. Together, we worked out a fitness regimen that suited all of Lindsay’s fitness needs. Through the years, we have conducted the three-day total body mid-rep moderate weight training principle. The system has kept Lindsay in wonderful shape, helping her develop balance, strength, strong bones, and flexibility.

For the past few years, Lindsay and Gary have spent their winters in Florida doing the snowbird thing. Now, when springtime rolls around, I am once again fortunate to have Lindsay and Gary back at Fitness Counseling. Lindsay’s personal training regimen is a little bit different due to the fact that I only have access to training her about six months out of the year. We now do a total body split regimen twice a week.  Lindsay also swims once or twice a week and has maintained a wonderful level of fitness. Lindsay’s fitness and healthy living lifestyle allows her to enjoy golf with her husband, Gary, and keeps her strong and fit on her travels, meeting up with her children and grandchildren on their adventures.

Lindsay knows that I am proud to be a part of her fitness journey. In all the years of training Lindsay, I truly can’t remember a time when she did not show up. Her discipline and total dedication are a wonderful example of success and should be followed by others. I told Lindsay the other day that I wish I had 20 clients like her because she makes the interaction peaceful. It is truly a pleasure and has been and is rewarding to be a part of the fitness journey with her.
